Division of Labour
The work of the Labour Division is governed by the Labour Standards Act Chapter 89:05 (PDF, 470 KB) of the Revised Laws of Dominica. The Department is headed by the Labour Commissioner assisted by the Deputy Labour Commissioner, Labour Officers and other support staff.
The Department is responsible for Citizenship and Naturalization, work and residence permits, student and entry visas, industrial relations, labour and productivity, recruitment of workers (Canadian Farm Workers and cruise ship employment through the Royal Caribbean line), trade disputes and Trade Union issues.
Procedure for filing complaint/dispute in the workplace to the Labour Division
- Come in to the Labour Division and discuss the matter. You will be advised as to whether the matter is a legitimate one or not
- In the event that the matter is considered legitimate, the Labour Division contacts the employer and discusses the matter
- If the matter is in conflict with the labour laws of the Commonwealth of Dominica, both parties are brought together to conciliation (meeting to resolve the issue(s)/dispute(s))
- If the matter(s) cannot be resolved at the conciliation, it is referred to a tribunal. It must be noted here that the tribunal has its own authority and methods of settling the dispute
